District 22 of the Department of California is comprised of 28 American Legion Posts in San Diego County. Each Post has it’s own unique profile and commitment to the American Legion’s 4 Pillars of service within their respective communities. Together, we come together in the following endeavors:
Each May we select 55 Junior High School students from High Schools in San Diego County who attendCalifornia Boys StateatCalifornia State University, Sacramento in June. There, they engage in a participatory program where they become part of the operation of local, county, and state government. They learn about the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of franchised citizens. Operated by students elected by their peers to various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and sporting programs.
Annually we award 24 students participating in Army, Navy and Air ForceROTCprograms at bothSan Diego State Universityand the University of San Diegowith theAmerican Legion Medal of Military Excellence and Scholastic Excellence.
During July we partner withVeterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) for Veterans Stand Down. There we provide meals and assist homeless veterans who have substance abuse and mental health issues. The heart of VVSD’s programs are the five pillars of success; Prevention, Intervention, Rehabilitation, Aftercare and Employment services.
Our $50,000.00 San Diego American Legion Endowed Veterans Scholarship Fund at San Diego State Universityawards military veteran students with scholarships. TheSan Diego American Legion, Endowed Veterans Scholarship, will fund scholarships that help cover gaps in federal funding for veterans, and will assist students with tuition and other needs. The goal is to enable veterans to complete their education without interruption due to financial hardship. This endowment will empower us to support our student veterans at SDSU in perpetuity.
On the second Saturday of each month, we provide lunch, bingo, prizes and camaraderie to hospitalized veterans at the VA Hospital La Jolla.
We encourage you to find a Post in our San Diego Community and help be part of the Veteran solution!
